Tufted fern-like plant ; up to 30 cm high , curling into a loose ball when dry , with erect stems , tufted or closely spaced , leafless , unbranched below , branched in the upper half , with branches and leaves inrolled when dry . Fronds bright dark green on upper surface , pale green or brown on lower surface , closely overlapping , dimorphic: laterals imbricate , oblong-elliptic , obtuse tip , with entire margins , hyaline on the front edge towards the base ; median oblong-ovate , obtuse or acute and falcate , with hyaline margins . Spore cases (sori) uniform , ovate-triangular , acute , the margin hyaline and denticulate , smaller and more contracted than the sterile leaves . (Ref . Miller & Cope ; 1996) .
