Monoecious . Shrub or small tree ; up to 10 m with reddish brown bark . Stems and branches short , loosely arranged , usually sharply directed upwards . Leaves in flat sprays , fleshy , opposite , broadly ovate , distinctly grooved on the back , scale-like , pale green . Fruit female cones of pink-salmon color , oval , glaucous ; scales 6-8 flattened , thick , with a strongly hooked boss near the apex . Seeds 4–6 mm long , with no wing . (Miller & Cope ; 1996) .
