A bulbous perennial , up 60 cm tall . Bulb rounded , composed of up to 15 smaller bulblets (cloves) , covered by a whitish or pinkish tunic (papery coat) . Stems erect , long . Leaves 1 . 25–2 . 5 cm wide , linear , flattened , solid , sword-shaped attached to an underground stem , with an acute tip , aromatic . Inflorescences borne in a dense , umbel cluster on a tall , erect spike , up to 25 cm long . Flowers hermaphroditic , greenish-white or pinkish ; perianth 6 , c . 3 mm long . Fruit capsule .
