Lemna gibba L.

This species is native to Europe, extending to Central Asia and W Himalaya, Africa, America. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 2 species of Lemna found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Aquatic , free-floating with solitary root . Stems and leaves reduced to a ± flat thallus . Thallus 3-5 x 2-4 mm , yellowish green , broadly ovate , slightly convex , spongy below with inflated cells and airspaces ; usually a large number of thalli cohering and floating together . Reproduction usually vegetative with daughter thalli buds forming laterally , 2 or 3 remaining attached with very short stipes . Flowers developing in a lateral cavity enclosed by a spathe , unisexual ; male flowers 2 , each with a single stamen ; female flower 1 , style short . Fruits narrowly winged above , 1-2-seeded . Seeds ribbed and transversely striate . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 4) .
