Rhizomatous , submerged , marine perennial herb , with 1-5 branched or unbranched roots arising from internodes , rooting in sand ; rhizome mat-forming . Stems erect , elongated , unbranched or little-branched , orange-brown . Leaves early deciduous , 100-150 × 6-13 mm , linear to falcate , 17-27-veined , entire , apex denticulate ; leaf sheath 15-30 mm , cream to pink , falling along with the leaf blade . Inflorescences solitary , terminal , enclosed by 4 leafy bracts . Flowers smal ; male flower: consisting of 2 anthers , yellow tinged with red ; female flower: consisting of 2 carpels . Fruit 3 . 5-5 cm , composed of the 2 ovaries and the fleshy inner bract , often germinating on the mother plant , free floating when ripe . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 4) .
