Cladium mariscus (L.) Pohl subsp. mariscus

This subspecies is native to America, Azores, Temperate Eurasia, N Africa, Australia, extending to SW Pacific; introduced elsewhere. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is one species of Cladium occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Robust , perennial sedge ; up to 90 cm tall or more , tufted , with erect branched thick woody rhizome covered with triangular scales , dark purple-brown . Stems erect , rounded , grey-green , hollow except at the nodes , terete , finely ridged , covered with leaf sheaths at base , smooth . Leaves inserted at the stem base and spiral along the length of stem ; leaf sheath to 15 cm , tubular , disintegrating into fibres , hard , persistent , brown ; ligule absent ; blade to 50 × 5-9 cm , linear , flat or folded , apex acuminate , trigonous , margin sharply serrate , greyish green . Inflorescences terminal , spikes clustered at the end of secondary and primary branches ; bracts longer than the partial inflorescence ; peduncles to 25 cm ; spikes fusiform , 4 mm .
