Cyperus cruentus Rottb.

This species is native to Eritrea, extending to S Tropical Africa and Arabian Peninsula. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 24 species of Cyperus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Perennial herb ; up to 20–40 cm long with short creeping rhizome . Stems (culms) many , tufted , trigonous , glabrous , with many withered loose leaf sheaths at the base . Leaves 5–30 cm long and 1–3 mm wide ; leaf sheaths reddish brown , margin translucent . Inflorescences of 10–25 crowded spikelets , ± ovoid , pale to dark brown , sessile or briefly stalked ; spikelets 2–6-flowered , ovate , compressed ; glumes reddish brown or yellowish with green keel , ovate-oblong , apex acute . Fruit nutlet , 1 . 6–1 . 8 × c . 1 mm , oval or oblong-ellipsoid , reddish brown , trigonous , minutely papillose . (Ref . POWO ; 2023) .
