Cyperus difformis L.

This species is native to Tropical & Subtropical Old World; introduced elsewhere. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 24 species of Cyperus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Slender to medium-sized annual or perennial herb ; up to 50 cm long . Stems (culms) triangular , glabrous . Leaves longer than the culms overtopping the inflorescence ; leaf sheath green to reddish brown ; leaf blade linear , flat , smooth or scabrid on margin and midrib , apex acuminate . Inflorescences simple to compound ; spikelets in dense clusters , sessile or at the end of primary and secondary branches , pale yellowish grey to dark brown , 6–30-flowered , ovoid ; glumes yellowish brown to reddish brown , obovate to rounded , keel green , winged . Fruit nutlet , 0 . 6–0 . 8 × 0 . 3–0 . 4 mm , obovate-elliptic , triangular , yellowish brown , smooth or minutely papillose . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 4) .
