Cyperus iria L.

This species is native to Tropical & Subtropical Old World, extending to Central Asia; introduced elsewhere. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 24 species of Cyperus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Erect annual or perennial herb ; up to 40 cm long with numerous , reddish brown roots . Stems (culms) single , triangular , glabrous , green . Leaves few , basal , as long as stems ; leaf sheath green to reddish brown or purplish ; leaf blade 8-20 cm , linear , flat or slightly keeled , apex acute , margins smooth , glabrous or scabrid at apex . Inflorescences a simple to compound anthela ; spikelets 5–20-flowered , in loose clusters , yellowish brown , slightly flattened ; glumes greyish green , ovate , apex obtuse , glabrous or slightly scabrid . Fruit nutlet , 1 . 3–1 . 6 × 0 . 6–0 . 8 mm , dark brown to black as mature , obovoid , trigonous , minutely papillose , surface almost smooth . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 4) .
