Cyperus laevigatus L. subsp. laevigatus

This subspecies is native to Tropics & Subtropics. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 24 species of Cyperus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Tufted perennial herb ; up to 50 cm long with a long creeping rhizome , pale brown to purple-black . Stems (culms) rounded to triangular or angular , glabrous , the basal part covered with short scales and rather loose leaf-sheaths . Leaves grey-green , shorter than culms ; leaf sheath pale to dark purple brown , loose ; leaf blade linear , sometimes absent , almost stem-like , margin inrolled , scarbid on margin but appears glabrous as margins are inrolled , apex acute . Inflorescences a solitary spikelet or more commonly a lax to crowded head of 1 to 20 spikelets ; spikelets loosely crowded , straight or curved , linear to lanceolate ; glumes very closely overlapping , pale-green to yellowish with reddish brown dots , broadly elliptic , apex acute , shortly mucronate or frayed . Fruit nutlet , grey to brown , often shiny , obovoid to ellipsoid , flat on one side , rounded on the other , smooth . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 4) .
