Fairly robust erect perennial herb ; up to 50 cm long with rather thick horizontal rhizomes . Stems (culms) few , clustered , trigonous , glabrous , reddish brown . Leaves few , withering early , as long as or shorter than the inflorescence ; leaf sheath pale to dark reddish-brown ; leaf blade linear , flat , with a distinct midrib , scabrid , apex acuminate . Inflorescences a compound anthela , consisting of 1 sessile and 4–8 stalked spikes ; spikelets oblong to lanceolate , reddish brown with 8–20 flowers ; glumes reddish brown , with a pale green keel , ovate-lanceolate , with hyaline margins , 1-3-veined , glabrous , apex obtuse . Fruit nutlet , 1 . 3–1 . 5 × 0 . 5–0 . 6 mm , dark brown to black , obovoid , trigonous , almost smooth , minutely punctate . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 4) .
