Stems (culms) tufted , slender , triangular , slightly scabrid below the inflorescence , sometimes woody at the very base . Leaves folded , thin , as long as or shorter than the culms ; leaf sheath greyish brown , frequently not enclosing the base all around ; leaf blade 1-2 mm wide , linear , flat , often curving at apex , apex acute to acuminate , scabrid on margins and primary veins . Inflorescences capitate , simple anthela with sessile spikelets ; spikelets in digitate clusters , 3–17(–30) per inflorescence , squarrose , lanceolate ; glumes reddish brown , ovate , acute to mucronate and recurved , scabrid .
