Cyperus squarrosus L.

Fairly slender , dwarf annual , up to 16 cm tall with a minute root system , smelling strongly of fenugreek when dried . Stems (culms) crowded and tufted , 5-20 cm tall , 3-sided , almost glabrous , not swollen at the base . Leaves basal , alternate , flat to V-shaped in cross-section , shorter or about as long as the stems ; leaf sheath greenish , rather wide ; leaf blade linear , flat , slightly scabrid to glabrous , apex acuminate . Inflorescence a simple anthela , consisting of 1–2 sessile spikes and 1–7 stalked spikes ; spikelets in dense spikes , linear , yellowish green to reddish brown , flattened , squarrose with recurved glume-apices , 5-15-flowered ; glumes reddish-brown , tipped green , elliptic . Fruits nutlet dark grey , narrowly oblong to obovoid , triangular , minutely papillose , disarticulating at its base but held by persistent glume so that it falls with the spikelet . (Ref .
