Aquatic rhizomatous perennial , up to 1 . 5 m tall ; with short , creeping rhizome . Stems green , erect , 3-angled to obtusely 3-angled just below inflorescence , not leafy above base , glabrous . Leaves submerged leaves , soft , linear , flat ; emergent leaves reduced ; leaf sheath green with wide membranous sides . Inflorescence anthelodium , with few to many spikelets ; spikelets solitary , pedunculate , ovoid , pale brown , terete , densely many flowered , apex ± acute ; glumes cymbiform , membranous , mucro extending beyond apex , margins widely scarious . Flowers bisexual ; perianth bristles (3 or)4(or 5) , rust-colored , ligulate-spatulate , ± as long as nutlet . Fruits nuts , dark brown to black , oboviod , beaked , smooth . (Ref . The rhizomes of mature specimens can be dug up and eaten later in the season. In the taller and better grown plants the rhizomes swells to quite a useful size, and was either eaten raw or was cooked. The smaller one were gathered only in times of hunger, or as a passing mouthful while out herding. The rhizomes are high in starch and while not particularly good tasting, they were filling if eaten in enough quantity. Livestock browse the flowering head and triangular shaped stem were cut and used as a water- proof roofing material, as were other sedges and rushes. The stem were also used as flooring, but the tall grass (Themeda quadrivalvis) was usually preferred for this purpose as being more widely available and softer.
