Densely tufted perennial with short rhiozome and fleshy , dark purplish roots . Stems hollow , greyish green , erect , almost terete with many rounded longitudinal ridges , deeply grooved , glabrous . Leaves basal , greyish green , narrowly linear , wiry , apex obtuse , margins smooth ; leaf sheath chestnut-brown to reddish brown , often glossy ; leaf blade flat or somewhat canaliculate , hard and wiry . Inflorescence of a blackish capitate head of 5–20 tightly overlapping spikelets ; spikelets flattened , acute , dark brown to blackish , usually 2–3-flowered ; glumes distichous , keeled , acute to shortly apiculate , margins membranous . Flowers bisexual ; perianth bristles 3-4 , much shorter than the nut , very small or absent . Fruits nuts 1-2 mm , ovoid to ellipsoid , obtusely trigonous , smooth , shiny , creamy-white to grey .
