Halophila ovalis (R.Br.) Hook.f.

This species is native to the coasts of tropical East Africa, Madagascar, Arabia, Pakistan, eastwards to Australia and the western Pacific. (Ref. Flora of Oman; vol.4). There is only one species of Halophila occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Dioecious ; submerged , marine , perennial herb , up to 5 cm . Rhizome creeping , slender with long internodes . Root single at nodes . Nodal scales 2 . Leaves simple , petiolate , paired , 10-40 x 0 . 5-20 mm , elliptic to oblanceolate to ovate , glabrous , base rounded , apex obtuse , margins entire ; petiole 1-5 cm . Spathes with 2 overlapping bracts . Inflorescences solitary or paired . Flowers irregular , bisexual ; male flower with perianth 3 , 4 mm , elliptic , transparent with a dark stripe in the middle ; female flower sessile , perianth parts 3 , reduced ; ovary inferior , 1-locular . Fruit 3-4 mm , ovoid-globose , with a beak up to 6 mm long , 20–30-seeded . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 4) .
