This species is native to Africa, Middle East, Central Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, New Guinea, New Caledonia and northern Australia; (Ref. https://en.wikipedia.org). introduced in Europe and N America. (Ref. Flora of Oman; vol.4). There are 2 species of Najas found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).
Monoecious . Submerged annual or perennial herb ; up to 50 cm . Stems sparingly branched , without spines ; internodes to 1 . 5 cm long . Leaves sessile , opposite or in pseudo-whorls , soft and flexible , 10-30 x 1-2 mm , linear , margins smooth , apex with 2-3 teeth ; leaf-sheaths deeply auriculate . Inflorescences with male and female flowers solitary or 2-4 together at the same node . Flowers 1-2 per axil . Male flowers in the upper axils , spathe absent , pedicelled ; perianth-lobes 1 . 5-2 mm long , globose-oblong , hyaline ; anthers 4-celled , c . 1 . 5 mm long , elliptic . Female flowers through out ; spathe absent , subsessile , to 3 mm long ; perianth - lobe closely appressed to ovary ; ovary c . 2 mm long , elliptic ; stigma 2(-3)-lobed . Fruit 2 mm , oblong-ellipsoid . Seeds small . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 4) .
