Dioecious . Submerged annual or perennial herb ; up to 1 m long . Stems thick , coarse , slender , branching , green to brownish , mostly armed with spines . Leaves sessile , opposite or in pseudo-whorls , 10-30 x 2-5 mm , linear to linear-oblong , margins spinose-dentate , apex acute , fleshy , bright green turning brownish ; spines also often present on the dorsal midrib ; leaf-sheath rounded . Inflorescences solitary in the leaf axils . Flowers minute , stalkless , green . Male flowers 2-5 x 0 . 8-3 mm , enclosed by 2 scales . Female flowers 2-5 mm long , naked ; ovary 1-3 . 5 x 0 . 3-1 . 9 mm ; stigma 3-lobed . Fruit 3 mm , ellipsoid , reddish-brown at maturity . Seeds 1 . 9-7 . 5 mm x 0 . 8-3 . 3 mm , ovate , slightly asymmetrical . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 4) .
