Perennial herb ; up to 1 . 5 m , often gregarious and seemingly tufted , with a creeping branched rhizome , and few–many culms often set in dense rows . Stems in elongated rows , dense rigid , often with a spiny tip . Leaves 4-5 , 25-110 x 0 . 1-0 . 3 cm , glabrous , acute and spinescent at the apex . Inflorescences lax , usually elongated , with up to 150 heads ; heads 2-4(-6)-flowered , bracteate . Flowers bisexual ; perianth 3-5 mm , margins broad , scarious ; outer perianth narrowly ovate , acute to obtuse , sometimes with a small mucro ; inner perianth oblong , obtuse , with margins expanded apically ; stamens 6 , 2/3 to 3/4 as long as the perianth . Fruit capsule , trilocular , strew-coloured , exceeding (rarely equaling) the perianth , narrowly ovoid , apex trigonous , tapering , sometimes abruptly contracted .
