Arundo donax L.

This species is native to W & Central Asia, extending to temperate E Asia; introduced world wide. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is only one species of Arundo occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Tall rhizomatous perennial reeds ; up to up to 5 m tall . Stems (culms) erect , hollow , pale green , 2-3 cm in diameter . Leaves cauline , grey-green , conspicuously distichous ; leaf blade rounded or cordate at the base , up to 60 x 5 cm ; ligule membranous with minutely ciliolate margin . Inflorescences a panicle , 30-60 cm long , plumose ; spikelets comprising 3-5 fertile florets ; with a barren rhachilla extension ; glumes persistent ; similar ; reaching apex of florets ; lemmas (6-)8 . 5-13 mm long , with an awn ± 1 . 5 mm long , membranous . Flowers lodicules 2 . Fruits caryopsis with adherent pericarp ; ovoid . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 4) .
