Annual herb ; up to up to150 cm long . Stems (culms) erect , pale green . Leaves cauline ; leaf-blade scaberulous , rough on both sides . Inflorescences panicle , patent or contracted and secund , up to 25(-40) cm long ; spikelets 17-30 mm long , comprising 2-3 fertile florets , with a barren rhachilla extension ; glumes broadly elliptic , acuminate ; lemmas 2-25 mm long , glabrous on the callus .
