Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. subsp. australis

This subspecies is native to Temperate & Subtropical Old World to Tropical Mountains; introduced to other parts of the world. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 3 known species of Phragmites found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Tall rhizomatous perennial reed ; up to 4 m tall . Stems (culms) erect , hollow , reed-like , simple , with hollow internodes . Leaves alternate , cauline ; leaf blades 20-60 cm x 8-32 mm , deciduous , flat , smooth beneath , the tip filiform and flexuous , sometimes shorter and tightly rolled , stiff and pungent . Inflorescences panicle 15-20(-30) cm long ; spikelets with upper glume lanceolate , sharply acute and usually apiculate ; rhachilla hairy ; glumes shorter than the lowest lemmas , 3-to 5-veined , lower glume ovate , 2 . 7-5 mm long ; upper glume lanceolate or elliptic-oblong , 5 . 5-9 mm long ; floret callus linear , plumose ; fertile lemmas hyaline , 1-to 3-veined , glabrous , long-caudate , entire . Fruit caryopsis with an adherent pericarp . Seeds 2 to 3 mm long . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 4) .
